I'm specfically looking for a M1 Garand. I have been to my local sports/gun shop and they don't even know where i can find one, ever since i have seen one in WWII movies and other things i simply must get one, they are so awesome.

Civilian Marksmanship Program

Getting one here you are guaranteed an original issue M1. It easy to get ripped off when purchasing an M1Garand if you don't know anything about them. I have 5 :D

E mail me if you want and I will get you some info and links.

Try the local classifieds. My neighbor is a Korean War vet that collects guns, and he gets a bunch of gun trading classifieds. Without exagerating, he has at least 5,000 firearms and tens of thousands of rounds ammunition in every caliber available. He owns two houses he lives in one, and the other right across the road is nothing but rooms and rooms of gun racks and ammo crates. If you really must find one i can go ask him if he knows of anyone that is offering one for sale?

i don't want to have to do that CMP-affiliated gun club or state association and all that crap, i know what safety and stuff is and i don't have time to take a gun and go out shot wood stuff, i just want to collect one.

If you just want one to look at any POS will do. Try Century Arms. I thought you wanted one with collector value. That was my point about getting ripped off. The CMP only has originals, nothing fake or reproduction.

If you are serious about collecting then look no further than MilTech

That's your rebuilt, top of the line competition M1s.

Just make sure you get a Springfield (there is actually another original issue that I can't think of the maker). If it's H&R or something like that, stay away. Have someone who knows about them give it a once over to make sure it's the real deal, and that it hasn't been "fixed" (non original barrel, etc).

If you've never held one, you're in for a treat. Easily double the weight of any current rifle. I've never weighted one, but I would guess about 14lbs. They are big ass heavy. Beautiful guns. I've been looking for an original issue M1 Carbine, but haven't had great success. Most are beat to hell.

Weird, just looked at it shows they weigh just under 10 lbs. They always seem heavier than that to me, a lot heavier. Next to a Bushmaster or something like that it's a huge difference...Surely a BM weighs more than 5 lbs...

Harrington & Richardson were the last manufacturers of the m1. These are the most accurate of the issue rifles. They had the process down pat. Springfield made the most production numbers. International Harvester made 3 runs during WWII. These are the most collectable pieces eaxcept for rare variations and the M1d/M1c sniper rifles. Winchester made several runs during the war as well. These are hard to find with all original parts.

A lot of M1's are considered imports. They were sold to South Korea, Thailand, Philipines etc. Distributors would by them back and bring "them home". Until they were banned from importation under the assault weapons bill. What a crock.

Wow! I though that you were from the hillbilly south, but New York is a little close to Canada with that much of weapons. Could you ask your ?neighbor? to lend his arsenal reserve to the Canadian army if we need it to defend ourselves vs. the French, because he have a larger cash than our entire force...........:Q

I've got one, but you can't have it. ;)

I'm thinking about getting a paratrooper stock (pistol grip, folding stock) for it, and putting the wood somewhere where it won't get used. My Grandpa got this one right after WW2 and hasn't done much of anything with it since.

EDIT - On that "gun E-bay", what do FFL dealers usually charge as a transfer fee?

ok, that first one, the CMP thing, has the best prices, i'm looking to spend like maybe 600 or so, scratch or so on the wood, etc is fine but i don't want no like dings and gouges and missing stuff, hehe, i might have to try and see if my uncle who is a veteran can see about this since some of the stuff is waived.

I've done business with this company. They are very well respected in the Houston area. In fact, many dealers will refer you to them if they don't have what you want.

For $600 I think you're going to be pretty disappointed. From what I've seen, Garands in that price range have extremely worn metal (significant dings and gouges in the barrel), and the wood is in poor shape. Great for plinking and for nostalgia. That's just the ones I have seen though, that's why I don't own one yet. The ones I would consider acceptable run $950+ :(

Thanks for the clarification 308. I didn't know exactly where H&R entered the picture on them. International Harvester was the name I was trying to think of but couldn't.

You never know what you will get with a CMP rifle. You will not get a sh!tty one though. I have seen them new unfired(testing only), rebuilt unfired(testing only) and used but not abused. These are straight from the Army depot. Yes, the government selling you guns.:Q

They have all been rebuilt at least once, maybe several times. The luck of the draw gats one rebuilt in the 1950's which hasn't seen daylight since it was sealed in Cosmolene.

The $500 ones you see around are the "imports" I refered to above. They strip the parts off of the original receiver and bring the parts "home". They are then rebuilt on cheap@ss, improperly heat treated and out of spec reproduction receivers. YOU DO NOT WANT ONE OF THESE TO SHOOT !!! Make a great wallhanger for the money i guess but I play with my toys.
