Anyone know where I can get parts for a lawnmower engine.

I was mowing the lawn over the weekend and completely missed a skateboard wheel in the tall grass. Anyways, it got caught in the blades and seized the engine. After trying to crank it, I noticed large amounts of smoke and some oil coming from the exhaust. I want to give it a try and repair it myself but have no idea where to get parts from. I'd prefer a B&M store but online would do too. Any suggestions, it's a Briggs ans Stratton if that helps.

Disclaimer: I'm NOT a mechanic, and am far less knowledgeable than most here. I'm just a computer geek that happens to own a mower. :)

Anyway, I have had my mower smoke after starting it again after running over things that sieze it up (rope, plastic tubing, etc). But it always returned to normal after a second or so of sputtering. You did let it try to run for more than a second, right?

Many places like True Value have service departments for light equipment and will have parts.

Hm, I wonder if any of those actually sell the parts or will just service the engine. I was kind of hoping of doing it myself.

Yeah I did try to keep it on but once it turned off on it's own it wouldn't turn back on, no matter what I tried.

You can buy the parts. But if it seized, you need a new block, piston, rings,
and maybe the connecting rod. And you don't just throw them in. You need
to check clearances and torque the bolts properly. Toss in a gasket set as
well. You may have even damaged the crankshaft. The 2 most costly parts
will be the crankshaft and the part of the block where the piston goes up and
down (if you can get that section without the whole block) .. it would help to
know the MAKE & exact Model # of the motor .. Briggs, Techumseh or whatever.
Then parts can be looked up. As I said earlier, faster, easier, cheaper & comes
with a Warranty to just buy a replacement motor. You can install it yourself in
about 2 hours
