Anyone know when the opterons/hammers will be available?

...and some good motherboards for them, too? I need about $1300 more and I recently got told by a friend that the local McD's where he works has a few openings. It's flippin burgers... but it's the only thing I could get right now. The reason that I ask for any idea when they'll be available is because I'd rather work one day a week in the summer rather than wasting part of my weekend when school is going on. Thanks.

The server class Opterons should be available in April. Don't expect to buy one of these...the pricing will be targetted for the server market.

The consumer version of the Hammer, the Athlon 64, won't be available until September. Don't count on all the software and drivers to be fully ready for 64-bit yet either.

This will be for my god box... exactly how much will one server-class opteron be? I'm also wondering about motherboard availability...

I think there was a theory that they delayed the launch a couple days every time someone asked when they were coming out 🙂
I can't remember the thread that was in though.

Thanks for the info Andy.

I was wondering this myself, as I plan to hold off on an upgrade until they come out. It just so happens September is my birthday month. 😀

I think the most important part of Andy's reply was "don't count on all the software...". I've been curious about this ever since AMD said it was going to go 64-bit. I know, personally, that the 64-bit SGI machines we have on campus run 32-bit code horribly (I hope the Athlon64 isn't as bad as they are)..... but they run 64-bit code splendidly. I think the BIG question is: will MS (and Linux) have a mainstream quality 64-bit OS (and the corresponding applications) available?

(I'm not ripping AMD--personally, I'd love to see an affordable 64bit processor--it makes all those "double precision" calculations I do that much faster 🙂)

AMD is now stating April 22 as the Opteron release date. I thought for sure they used to say April 12. Am I incorrect, or is it the lack of sleep last night making me think poorly?

AMD says they delayed the Athlon 64 to September to have it released with a 64-bit Windows. But I honestly don't think they will all be ready then. Microsoft isn't well known for getting software out the door. Why knows if Microsoft delays it by a quarter will the Athlon 64 also be delayed another quarter?

Motherboards shouldn't be a problem. They were ready at the end of 2002 when they expected to see the Hammers.

Cost is a big issue that still hasn't been answered. I'd expect an opteron CPU to be very expensive. My expectations for the Athlon 64 have always been $500 - $750. Add a minimum of $250 to that for Opteron (I think you'll likely see $500 more). I really haven't been reading up on pricing lately. Is there any new guidelines to help out?
