Does anyone know?

Im holding back on upgrading my dual 4870s until this one comes out or the 5870s get real cheap.

Rather 6750/6770 I think. Southern Islands is rumored to be a hybrid between the current architecture and a new architecture, called Northern Island, aimed for the 28 nm node. Why it would be the 67xx chip and not the 68xx chip is probably based on power/size considerations and this chip will still be made on the 40 nm node. The 68xx chip would then arrive in 2011 and be based on the 28 nm node.

So it is rumored to a little more than modified 5870:)

Unless i missed some recent juicy rumors...

Funny I heard that ATI will release a mid range card first.
The names 6770 and 6750 would back up that claim.

This info is making me sick. I was hoping for a revision of the 58 series tech. One that was cheaper OR at the very least make the 5870s cheaper.

Eh dual 4870s I don't think you need to worry, that's 5870 performance.

And there's a good possibility that the SI chips will launch earlier than later. I assure your the 68XX series won't be a 2011 part, that's clearly northern Island territory, which is a different architecture likely named 7XXX.

Darn, I was hoping it would be out before Crysis 2.

Ha! It will take until 2015 until you will be able to max out Crysis 2 on a single videocard :awe: Even now a single GTX480 only gets 34 frames per second average at 1920x1080 4AA: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/geforce-gtx480-sli_6.html#sect4

So it's not like NI is going to make Crysis 2 "fly". I would say at the very minimum, when upgrading from dual 4870s you are going to want GTX470 SLI or 5870 CF.

A new chip will likely drive down prices. Once the process is piad for and the silicon used up. Chips always go down in price as they make more. The R&D cost has been absorbed.

depends on how you bench the cards. The 5870 can outscore the 4870's in several catagorys. The pendeulum also swings back to the 4870's in some regards as well.

However given the dx11, eyefinity multi monitor support and the lower power consumption and heat. The 5870 is a substantial upgrade. The power difference is pretty tangiable to.

it'll be 2050 before anyone can max out Crysis. Arguably one of the most poorly coded games I have ever seen.

They should hire the folks that did Dirt 2 to come and fix that game. Its horriable.

I think the gtx470 is alot of hype. Have tried some game play on a good system and while it benchmarks really well the game play isn't as good as the 5870 or even the 5850.

At this point, probably never. There's really no need. AMD and nVidia don't always put out an "ultra" part.

To be blunt: You have no idea what you are talking about.

um, yeah, wikipedia is sometimes pretty reliable and sometimes...not. we'll be lucky to have anything this year as long as nvidia continues to be in the doldrums.
