WHQL drivers 175.16 and 175.19 do not work with 7 series cards despite them being WHQL'd for that series of cards and your forced to use the older 169.21 drivers for it to work.

Anyone know if Nvidia plans on fixing this?

if they officially claim support, and it doesn't work, then yea... i see no reason why not.
Contact nvidia to make sure they know of it

that too, tell them exactly the model, i doubt the entire series is not supported.

Maybe you need to run some driver cleaner app.

I have a 7900GT. PCI-Express with Windows XP SP3 and it doesn't work, I have to use the 169.21's for it to work. I did some googling and read others were encountering the same problem too. :S

Also, I've tried this on a clean-installation of the system and without; and I can't get either to work.

Maybe, it's just 7900 series that doesn't work?

Edit:
I'm going to see if I can get the 177.93 beta's to work.

well, just cause people complain online doesn't mean its a known bug. I have reported bugs that have been known on forums for a long time, only to have them thank me for reporting it an unknown bug, tell me it will be worked on, and then get a fix for it rather quickly. (with various companies)

The thing is, where I read it was directly on nvidia's forums. So someone has to see it :S ,unless it's not well-moderated(or is done strictly by users).

Also, just tried the 177.93's beta's; they don't work either.

Now, just to figure out how-to contact nvidia...

found it....

what exactly is your problem? have you tried the card in another machine? it could be specific to your card, perhaps the cooling fans or it overheated once.

Actually Quiksilver brings up an interesting issue because I too have that exact same problem. None of the new WHQL drivers work unless I'm using 169.21 or even the 169.25 drivers. I'm also running a 7900GT but using Vista 64 instead of XP.

When I try and install the newer drivers, my native resolution of 1920 x 1200 on my 24 inch drops to 1280 x 1024 and the monitor is no longer recognized. When I enter device manager, it shows a yellow exclamation mark next to the 7900GT and gives me a code 43 error under the driver tab.

Quiksilver, are you getting that error and problem as well in the device manager?

I don't remember the exact error; but I do get an error in device manager.

My native resolution is 1680X1050 and if I try to install the newer drivers it never finishes installing; like normally you would be prompted more installation dialogs after your asked to reboot to finish the install, well that never happens and it just takes me to windows desktop in the default 640X480 @ 4-bit color. The happens with all latest WHQL drivers and Beta driver's; despite my card being on the supported list for the drivers.

Read above to describe the problem. The card works just fine, and temps are fine too. It's a problem with the drivers and I (and stipalgl) have to use an older set of drivers for it to work; and were on two different operating system.

Anyway I've been talking with Nvidia support, so maybe they can help or put in word for it to be fixed.

Quiksilver, I'm experiencing pretty much the exact same scenario you described with the installation as well, except it puts me at a default of 1280 x 1024 as I stated. Let me know please if Nvidia tells you anything useful since it may be able to help me as well.

Quick Update:

I have been doing as the nvidia support rep has been asking me and have made a small success and got the 174.74 beta drivers to install, but still no change from the 175.19 drivers. So, it would appear that something changed in their drivers between the 174.74 beta's and the current 176.19 WHQL drivers.

I also checked device manager this time, my code is different from your stipalgl; I have "Code 10: Device failed to start." but this could be because of the different operating systems.

ahh, okay well download this driver 177.92, then download the .inf file. The links are provided at the top of the page. Unzip the driver files to a directory, then throw the .inf file into that folder and overwrite the original in the prompt.

Install the drivers & enjoy. I recommend you clean the dust from your 7900GT's cooler, and use Rivatuner for overclocking. Gpu-z & Nvidia control panel will provide even more information.

....

My 8800GTS 320mb constantly produces BSOD with those. I am using 175.19s.

I don't need a modded INF file. Read a few posts up for details about what exactly the problem is.

If I needed a modded INF file it wouldn't even try to install and I would get "Setup has detected no compatible cards blah blah blah installer will now exit" dialog boxes.

The beta drivers by default already support my card.
Also, as I said, the card's temps are fine and don't need to be cleaned; it's already been done very recently.

Besides all this, I am not trying to get a beta driver to work, it's the plain WHQL drivers for the card that do not work.

Meh, it would seem this little bug in their drivers are in nvidia developers hands now as they have to recreate the bug and fix it; only good news of this is the next driver release should fix this issue.

Weeee.... I'm being transferred to a "level 2 tech support" I apparently have to wait on them... Hmmmm no idea when that will be.

Probably better off for both of us to wait for new drivers. I could see that taking less time.

Well, the only update I've got now is well... to wait. Basically we are now just waiting on the issue make its way to Nvidia Dev's to recreate this bug and fix it. The shortest ETA I have on this is well, 1 month. So, perhaps the next driver will fix this issue.
