Anyone know when new MBP's will be released?

I'm interested in getting a 15-inch MBP but I don't want to get it and then find out two weeks later that Apple refreshed their line-up. Anyone know when the next refresh is expected to take place? Thanks in advance.
 
Besides some small speed increases you won't see a major change to the MBPs until Sandybridge comes out, or Apple switches to AMD... something that would happen after Sandybridge.

Buy a 15', give it a SSD.

My understanding is that since Apple is pushing OpenCL (sort of like CUDA, a way to offload work to the GPU) and the intel integrated GPU is not good for that or as a GPU. Apple didn't want to just use the intel integrated, nVidia isn't allowed to make chipset for the Core i chips yet which means that Apple would have had to fit 3 chips (and their cooling) in the space of 2. Sony found a way to do it (I guess they did, in the Sony Z) but that is twice as expensive.
 
So would it be better to wait until then? Do prices of current MacBooks go down when the new version comes out or do the old ones just disappear? Sorry im just recently an applelover and getting up to speed 🙂 looking to buy one in the next 6 months.

When a new model comes out, the previous model gets moved to refurbed. Sometimes you can find them on Amazon at a discount, or in retail stores like MicroCenter (I think). You can also get current models refurbed for a discount.

This may or may not be true.

There are speed bumps for the current gen processors coming in the fall (I don't remember exactly why or how or what), but there's a mid-generation bump coming. Apple may or may not choose to embrace it. What I'm hoping is they do, and throw in something like making high-rez standard (if it's only a $90 upgrade, that's not inconceivable). Add in a small boost in HD capacity and a little something else, and you have a cheap upgrade for the holiday season, and to tide people over until your complicated Sandy Bridge models are ready. With the differences in microarchitecture, and the big change to the GPU, it seems reasonable to assume it'll be complicated for Apple to sort out it's GPU switching/OpenCL/Grand Central/etc etc. So I think a April '10 - November '10 - April '11 (or even June '11) schedule makes more sense than a April '10 - Jan/Feb '11. There as a 10 month gap between last updates (June '09 - April '10) but that was the exception, not the rule (we all hope).

Regardless, the one thing you can count on at this point, as people waiting 6 extra months for Arrandale, day by day, should have learned is that there WILL be Best Buy SKU leaks, and there WILL be extended shipping times in Europe and at major US partners, and that until those sorts of things happen, waiting Tuesday after Tuesday for an update is a waste of time.
 
The refresh with the Core i5/i7 based processors just came out less than 5 months ago. There is no reason to think that Apple would refresh this fast - there is nothing better to refresh to.

Like others have said Sandy Bridge is the next logical choice for a refresh - get the laptop now unless you plan on waiting another 4-6 months.
 
My advice is the same advice I give in all computer upgrade instances: If you want it now, buy it now, unless Apple has already announced a macbook event but hasn't had it.

Yes, I did read it. And they "guess" it won't be refreshed. I can guess too, no? And what constitutes a "refresh" anyway? A new ordering option is still something to consider, whether or not you think it's "worth" it.

I still say that just because the last refresh took them 10 months doesn't mean the next one will take them 10-14 months. They were way late on Arrandale, and even if they're "on time" with Sandy Bridge (unlikely, for the reasons stated) that'd put them with another 10 month cycle. Since I see that as unlikely, I'd assume they'll do something in between. Whether it's a "media event" level thing, or just kicking up some of the specs silently, I don't think they're going to hop from Arrandale to Sandy Bridge, with a year wait in between.
 
IMHO a refresh is when the product line gets overhauled. Basically when a new Intel platform comes out that they have a chance to rethink the design of the device.

I guess the next refresh would hopefully have USB 3.0 or Lightpeak, maybe wireless display, some hardware redesign, some extra feature (fingerprint reader perhaps) or something in that vain. I doubt that new series of MacBooks is upon us any time soon.
