Anyone know what's up with my computer?

So all of the sudden one day my internet is running very slow. I figured it was a virus or something so I ran Norton live update, ran stinger, ad-aware, etc. but it didn't help the problem. So I'm thinking hey, maybe I should format, it's been a while. So I did and still no luck. Everything appears to be working fine except the internet. I can get online, but everything loads extremely slow! Do you think if I upgraded the RAM it would help? My system used to run fine on 256. Currently here is my system setup:

ASUS AV733 mobo
40GB Maxtor HDD
256mb crucial RAM
Athlon 1800XP
blah
blah
blah

If you have run across this problem or have any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks in advance

is it just browsing the net in general? just through IE? can you download large files fast and it just takes a long time for it to find the actual site? actually, i probably should have asked your connection speed first. you have broadband or dialup? 😛
 
Both IE and Firefox run slow... downloading files takes forever as well. The pages take about 2 minutes to completely load. I have a DSL connection w/ a local service provider. Everyone else is not having the same problem I am that is using them.

you going through a router? if so, try and plug it directly into your computer, still goes slow, it isn't your router. if that doesn't work, try swapping out your NIC. maybe your NIC is going bad.
 
Well, I don't think this completely solved my problem but internet is a bit faster now. I simply plugged the DSL modem into a different USB port and speed picked up.

Sounds like your computer is infested with all sorts of crap. And yes, an extra 256 mb of ram will make your system a lot more responsive overall. Switching a modem to a different usb port shouldnt be making any difference at all. It sounds more like something is up with your isp. Try doing a speedtest to see if you are getting decent speeds.

Isn't that what the blaster worm caused? Have you installed Windows critical updates?

Try to ping your ip address and your server and see what you get. Also try to ping www. yahoo.com or other websites. You may need to reboot your modem. Might want to check and see if your dns server numbers, ip address, and default gateway are correct.

That 60 sec countdown wasn't blaster, but it's most likely one of the Sasser variants. Try Stinger - then we can deal with what's left...
 
If you get that shutdown message and are running XP, simply go to Start>>Run and type in "shutdown -a" This will abort the current shutdown.
Next step is to make sure you download Security Update KB824146 for windows XP, as well as all other windows updates.

Restart your computer, if the problem still persists, do the whole "shutdown -a" trick, then update your antivirus definitions, and look for the specific blaster/lovsan removal tool.

I would also advise going to http://grc.com/default.htm and downloading and installing "shoot the messenger", "dcombobulator" and "unplug and prey"
