Anyone know what's going on with my tree?

It's not looking so good - the top is starting to die back and starting to see some leaves on the lower branches do the same. Trunk bark is starting to....splinter? away. I didn't notice any spots or anything on the leaves and didn't immediately notice a lot of bugs on the trunk

Dunno. If you pull off some bark, do you see galleries underneath where critters were moving? In any case, that tree's done. I'd start planning what you're gonna replace it with.

It's on it's way out unfortunately. I'm not an arborist but I've had some experience working with trees. Hard to say what exactly is killing it but it didn't like something under the ground that the roots found.

Well that sucks - thanks. I didn't see any critters there under the bark but....*shrug*

Have any unusual cold snaps? We had a dozen poplars wiped out from that a few years back.

But yeah the bark is falling off, it's likely done unfortunately.

Given the limited information, possibly sunscald from previous years, but as it is a maple and flagging dead in the crown, then verticillium wilt fits the evidence better.
