Anyone know what's a good laser multifuntion machine?

Looking at a Brother MPC-9700. Are there better units out there in the $350-$400 price area or less?

Check out the Canon MFC5550 it's like 399 after a $100 rebate or the HP LaserJet 3015. Brother Drums are prone to cracking and for the 9700 it's about $170 to replace. The Canon and HP get a new drum when you change the cartridge.
