Omaha is 2 hours down the road and the college world series are in play right now. It's basically one big party while that's in session. Once in Omaha you have the zoo and botanical gardens that are good for a day's worth of exploring.
If you swing 2 hours south of Des Moines to Kansas City you have Worlds of Fun Roller coaster park and more BBQ than you can swing a rack of ribs at.
Two hours east of Des Moines gets you to Iowa City where you can see the flood damage and the Amana Colonies.
Three hours north can get you to Mall of America in MN.
Not really much to do in Des Moines proper that I can think of.
I've been around the DSM area...and all of Iowa for that matter (currently live in pocahontas iowa), and can tell you there is not much to do unless you live on the east side of the state on the mississippi.
maybe it was because I was 16 at the time, but the last time I was in a corn state, everyone was like insanely hot out there. so there should be plenty to "do"
