Anyone know what this does?

I experienced a really slow Cable Internet connection since couple weeks ago. I called up my ISP and the technician told me to use "tracert" command to test out something. After type in the command it returned "over a maximum of 30 hops".

Does anyone know what is that mean? Is there anywhere that I can learn more about this stuff? I'm using WinME.

Any help in advance will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

"tracert" = trace route

All it does is show you every router that 1 network packet goes through, on it's way to the destination. By looking at a "tracert" report, you can see where the slowest link between 2 points is.

It can determine if your slowest link is, your isp, the isp's trunk line, or any number of "backbone" connections after that...

check out Whatis.com

Ohhh, and "tracert" will only show a maximum of 30 "hops" = routers

If you're trace routing and doing shared internet access, they can find out if you tell them the results to your tracert command. If you do it from a computer behind the server, then the first hop will be to your server. It will show a local IP address.
