According to apple-history.com, no less than five generations of iMacs were shipped with MacOS 8.6. Their specs:

CPU: 266-400 Mhz G3
Bus speed: 66 or 100 Mhz
RAM: 32-128 MB
HD: 6-13 GB
CD-ROM or CD/DVD-ROM
15" CRT@1024*768

Chcarnage's iMac-with-OS-8.6 specification tree for the tech-unsavvy (tm):

Q1: Is there a button on the CD drive?
A1: Yes (I place my CDs on a movable slide and push them back into the iMac to read them)
-> proceed with Q2
A2: No (I put my CDs in a slot to use them)
-> proceed with Q3

Q2: Please launch the Program "Apple System Profiler". It is located in the "System Folder" on "Macintosh HD". A window should pop up. In the right half you can find the text: "Processor: PowerPC G3". Please tell me speed number one line below this text.
A1: 266 Mhz
-> iMac Revision C
A2: 333 Mhz
-> iMac Revision D

Q3: Do you hear a ventilator in the iMac (and is it a blue one?) (Alternatively: Can you watch DVDs and plug in FireWire peripherals?)
A1: 2x yes (alternative question: 2x no)
-> iMac Slot Loading
A2: no (the iMac still may be a blue model) (alternative question: 2x yes)
-> proceed with Q4

Q4: Which color does your iMac have?
A1: Orange, red, blue, violet or green
-> iMac DV
A2: black
-> iMac SE (scroll down the page)
