Anyone here ever do an early upgrade with ATT and not use the NEXT program?

I'm 15 months into my contract. Normally I'd wait it out, but Samsung is guaranteeing $200 on my trade in (HTC Vivid, worth $20 according to att) if I get a Note 4.

I'd call, but they're closed now.

Thanks.

*************UPDATE**************
ok, so I called and they said no plan discount/monthly reduction for NEXT since I only have 1 line. The guy was new so he might have been wrong, but I'll trust him.

Even though I'm 15 months in they only have 1 non NEXT upgrade option and that's called the "iPhone early upgrade", $250 to buy out the rest of my contract, can be done after 6 months from beginning of contract. Then $40 activation fee + subsidized cost of phone.

I want to get the note 4 so my cost is going to be:

+250 contract buy out
+40 activation fee
+299 Note 4 subsidized cost
-20 phone trade in
-180 Samsung promotion difference
= $389 + tax

So my premium to upgrade now vs in 9 months is $50.

I figure my trade in phone will be worth 0 in 9 months so I might as well do it now.

I also asked what my chances of are for switching from the no longer offered $5 200 txt plan to the old $10 for 1000 txt plan and he said that they can only switch you to what you already have or something they are currently offering.

I bought a phone on early upgrade and it was $550 instead of $300. So I guess $200 off. Might depend on the brand you buy.

I ended up doing that last week as after all the months of ATT telling me I had a upgrade turned out not to be the case. If you do the non-NEXT stuff you need to buy out your contract. Depending on what that is (Mine turned out to be $250) as it could be different then someone elses.. I think. Either way it gets added to the bill. ATT is really pushing the hell out of the Next stuff so you may be better off just paying retail for the new phone and keeping it month to month.

NEXT is a ripoff.
How so?

It just divides the cost of the phone up over 18 or 24 months.
If you are like me and know you'll be staying with ATT and know you'll keep your phone for at least 2 years, it saves you money because they give the same $15/mo discount as if you weren't on contract.

The phone is yours to keep once payed off.

I think you have to turn in the phone at the end so that kills the deal.
Only if you don't pay it off and want to upgrade early.
It is ATT's attempt to capitalize on Keeping up with the Jones'.

But you don't get a discount like you would by paying up front.

NEXT is no more a ripoff than a car lease. No, it's not this great deal that's perfect for everyone, but it's an option that might work for certain people, and for most people it's certainly a better option than the regular 2-year contract option.

I only have 1 line and get the $15/mo discount. I think you need to be in a Mobile Share Value plan. I get 2gb to share amongst any number of lines (I only have 1).

I will be doing NEXT 18 once I find an in stock iPhone 6. It is basically 0% APR on the phone and still the lowest cost plan if you keep it through the 2 years.

I have the grandfathered unlimited data plan

No kidding. I switched to the no subsidy plan earlier this year so my bill went down ~$20. I already had my phone so I didn't need to get a new one. When I do need a new one I can either buy it outright or decide to do the NEXT plan and pay for it monthly. The phone is paid off in 20-24 months if you don't switch phones mid-plan, and it doesn't cost any more total than if you bought it outright in the first place. If you get a couple years out of your phones then it's an easier pill to swallow than $650 up front.

If you like a new phone every year, then you're paying ~$10 more per month than a 2 year agreement would be to have that new phone every single year. Given that with a 2 year agreement you're still usually paying ~$200 out of pocket, it's not a bad option if you always want the newest device. Plus you have the bonus of not being in a contract if you move and want to switch carriers.

Next is better than a car lease, because the phone is yours if you keep it until the end of your commitment. As best buy won't give me $200 for my 3GS unless I join Next, I'm in for a note 4 too.

Nice!
I have a 30% off employee discount at ATT and only 18% with Sprint and Verizon.
I need to stay with ATT for that reason.

How did you get 30%? I only get 21%. I just mentioned I have unlimited because I don;t want to switch to the share plan to get a rate reduction.

Unlimited... or "Unlimited" (throttled at 5 GB) though?

Eh, I'd rather have that vs Verizon's unlimited and no subsidized phone.
