I know that they use fairly high end panels for their lcds but what about their cheaper offerings?

The 24" iMac is IPS, the 20" iMac is TN. I do not know what is in the new MacBooks however.

IPS means.... something

I know that TN means Twisted Nematic (sp?) and basically is one of the cheaper kinds of displays, the sort that you find in most laptop screens. IPS is a much higher quality panel to my understanding.

IPS - in plane switching

means the common electrode is on the same substrate as the pixel electrode

generally means much better viewing angles than TN

TN and STN generally have faster response times

It was IPS like most Apples screens.

Now Apple uses a cheaper cost TN LCD panel in the 20" imac to sell a lower-cost imac to more people the majority of whom are fine with TN panels.

The 24"ers higher price is almost solely increased by the expensive H-IPS inside.

I have seen both and its literally night and day quality difference but judge for yourselves is best.

Good article on Panel Technologies:

OP- No Laptop uses IPS - too much power. All are TN or PVA.
