from a California community college?

Looking to add some reassurance to a friend badly seeking it. He has about a 3.6, which I've heard is good enough..

GPA isn't as important as you attitude towards alternative lifestyles. At least that's what I hear.....

From the site:

In 2001, the average GPA of transfer students admitted to the University was 3.3. However, the average GPA varies widely by campus and by major. Consult with your counselor or a UC campus representative to learn about the GPA that may be required for admission to particular campuses and majors. The GPA is only one factor by which an applicant is evaluated. Other factors, such as course patterns, are also important. The Advanced Standing Selection Criteria describe the standards campuses use to select students when the number of applicants exceeds the number of spaces available.

here is the link, sorry too lazy to make it fancy.

Check with your counselor about doing an IGETC, where if you have over a 2.0 or 2.5 GPA (can't remember which) and you apply early enough to transfer, they can't refuse you.

What major did he choose? I applied to UCLA with a 3.5 as a comm. major and I basically have a near zero chance. If the major is not impacted a 3.6 should get you in. Im lucky UCSD accepted me.

Depends on the major, but coming from a CA CC its pretty easy to get in. I go to a private school, gpa ~ 3.5 CS/Econ double major. I doubt I will get into either UCLA or Berk

Wow my friend's about to explode in anxiety. Decisions are supposed to be available now, but the UCLA site is down. Kind of funny actually.

Nope, it doesn't mean he is a shoe in. The UC's operate in strange and mysterious ways. So tell him to keep on holding his breath if he wants to go to Cal...
Good luck to him.

Not at all. UCLA's a good school, though. Not as good as Cal, but the people are much nicer/friendlier/relaxed than at Cal. I got into both and chose UCLA because of that fact. Cal's a great, top-rated institution (especially in ChemE) but when I was there most people I met were very pretentious and acted as though they were better than me. I got quite the opposite reaction on my visits to UCLA - it felt more like a place for me. Plus, you can't beat West LA.

I would recommend that your friend tour both campuses and maybe spend a day or two interacting with the students/locals. Also, since he's a transfer, I'd strongly recommend him joining some student groups and being very friendly to help make friends quickly. They are both huge schools and it can be tough w/o the whole dorm experience.

that's pretty much the complete opposite of everything I have ever heard. I went to Cal, but I was an out-of-stater so I did not grow up in cali and am not as familiar with the different "sects" in the state (ie, the "valley" people, the no-cal peope, etc.). But from what I remember (and from what I did observe), the UCLA folk seemed much more pretensious and snobby. The cal folk seemed much more laid back (actually no-cal seemed more laid back on average) and didn't care what how you dressed or what you looked like (granted I was in engineering, so others at the school might have been different).
