If a disk drive uses a cylinder/head/sector (CHS) scheme that is not understood by a particular BIOS, then drive translation is used to convert the geometry to one that is understood. Usually accomplished using "disk overlay" software like MaxBlast or Western Digital's product (can't remember what they call it)
