Anyone know what chipset this Dell 4600 uses?

A guy at work bought a Dell and brought it to me because it keeps shutting down with thermal protection errors. The guy has already cleaned off the heat sink and the problem persists. I pop the case and boot the PC and I find that the NB HS is getting BURNING HOT! I cleaned of the CPU and NB and applied some decent thermal goop. The computer still runs like a slug and I figure that it needs a new Mobo. I see that this Dell actually uses screws to mount the Mobo, so I am hoping that I can just replace the Mobo, HS and PS to get this rig back up and running right.

Here are the specs:
Dell Dimension 4600
P4 2.66Ghz 533FSB
Intel Mobo (MATX Skt 478B)
Integrated Video and Sound
2x128MB PC333
?? Hard Drive

If anyone knows where I can find out what chipset this board uses, it would be greatly appreciated. I am not sure this guy will want to fix this computer since I figure it will cost at least $110+ tax ($50 Mobo, $25 HS/Fan, $35 PS), and that is before I upgrade the memory (2x128MB..... Sheesh... have they no shame????). I am hoping that if I keep the chipset the same, I will be able to re-use the Windows XP Home install that is already on the HD. I am pretty sure that the O/S disc Dell gives won't work with a non-Dell mobo, but maybe I can 'ghost' the HD after I am done.

Let me know if you want/need any info that is written on the Mobo. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I found 2 boards listed on pricewatch. One is made by Intel with a dell bios (computer geeks) and the other is for a dell 2400. If your dell case has a removable backplate, these might work for you, but they don't have an agp slot for video cards. Your 4600 board has several listings on ebay for around $80. Ascendtech.us has a dell 3000 board with newer chipset that might also work with your case. It's about $60, and should work with any socket 478 cpus, including the 800 "c" series. Your old board has an 845 chipset for 533 cpus.

Thanks! That seems to be the one. Although I hate these 'dell' units, perhaps I will replace the mobo with one of these OEM's and limit the headaches/costs.

Hmmmm... I am trying to determine whether I need a F4491 or a 2Y832 motherboard. I don't see either number listed on the motherboard or anywhere inside the case. Perhaps I need to pull the board and check the back side?

For some reason, I think that I need the F4491, mostly because the boards I see listed on Ebay with that number seem to have integrated video (although, there was at least one that didn't). I have seen boards listed that don't have integrated video.

Can anyone point out where I'd find the Dell part number on the motherboard?

Does anyone know the difference between a F4491 and a 2Y832 motherboard?

As always, thanks for any suggestions/help.

Thanks... I have that link from a few posts back. It doesn't show which model number it is. Ebay seems to list two different numbers for this board. They both seem to have the same specs. I will pull the board and hope that there is more info on the 'back' side.

Perhaps I will call Dell tech support and see if they can give me a number that matches one of the two listed on Ebay.
