The phone companies have them strung all over the world..................so I would guess pretty long

apparently, if you have too many phones hooked up, the rings will become so low that you won't hear them. i'd assume the same holds true for HUGE runs of phone cable. but frankly, i doubt you'd be able to reach that length

well specifically, i'm in possession of 2 dsl modems. if i connect the 2 computers using the 2 dsl modems, how long can the phone cord be to maintain 10mbps?

also, when telcos say you have to be within a certain distance of the co to get dsl does that mean that the place of residence has a pair of copper wires running directly to the co or is there a repeater in there somewhere?

one more q: do i have to cross the wires in the phone cord in order to connect the 2 dsl modems properly?

i dont understand the point of doing that.. 10/100 nics and cat5 is much cheaper than 2 dsl modems...

Well, I had DSL for the first time last year. The phone jack was across the room from our comps, so I had to use a really long phone line cable. So long, that it could probably go around the room 10 times. We coiled it up in a tight bunch and used it like that for the whole year. Our subscription speed was 768kilobit down, which theoretically means 96kilobyte down. We consistently got around 90kilobyte down. So, we may have lost 6kilobytes due to our extra long phone line cable, but I like to blame it on the local telco and their crappiness.

Not if as he said he already has them and doesn't have nics and cable. Am I missing something?

hi moonbeam. i see the mods still don't like you either. anyway, i got the dsl modems and nics from earthlink (sign up twice, get twice the goodness!). i'm just wondering since i figure a phone cord is probably cheaper than a cat 5 or coax cable and those can do 100m and 185m respectively.

also, apparently you can order dry lines from the telco and tell them to connect two houses together that way. then you just use a dsl modem at each house to network the two.

Good luck with the project. I don't blame the mods. I seem to confuse everybody else, why not them. :D I put you in for elite as usual, when you were gone in our most recent 'who should get elite thread'. Last time I saw Isla, she wasn't elite either. She is to me.

would it be safe to assume the max length is the same as a cat 5 cable or is that too conservative?
