Anyone know the best linux to run on a Thinkpad X30?

I have tried a few livecds and unlike my previous laptop (dell insprion 8000) which ran every linux I threw at it I cannot get a linux live cd to get to the desktop on the x30. I crashes for various reasons. I have tested the ram, hd etc all is working perfect and winxp pro runs great.

the x30 uses a usb external cdrom drive since its so small and light I dont know if that makes a difference.
