I'm currently searching for a good part-time job for a 17-year-old, but there aren't very many options in my area. I've heard there are a lot of good telecommuting jobs out there, like customer service reps, etc. Anyone know of some good jobs a kid my age can do over the computer or phone for minimum wage?

Start your own porn site. Seriousy. If you've of flexible moral fiber there can be good money there.

I'd imagine it would be. For example, you can't work at a liquor store if you're under 21. Would you ever get caught though? *shrugs* Doubtful. Ymmv.

tech support
customer service.

pick up your local paper and do the dance. ask your parents...

drink a lot of  while you can.

Well, actually, something a bit better than minimum wage would be good, as minimum wage kind of sucks. But, being able to do it from home, without it conflicting with your schedule too much, would make up for a low pay. Going out of home and finding a normal job is a last resort. Things have been slow lately, and really my only hopes are Burger King, Giant Eage, and maybe a couple pizza places. Not too many options, and all terrible hours. Also around lots of other working kids my age. Plus a lot of my friends have gotten fired from the places I would apply at, and not necessarily from doing a bad job. Sometimes they just get an overflow of teenage employees.

So, what's AT MODS? Linkage?

Actually, I wouldn't feel morally wrong running a porn site, but that wouldn't happen anyway. I'd need a lot of starting funds, a lot of, umm...content...heh...and a system to take credit cards, etc. Wouldn't work for a 17-year-old kid, especially since I couldn't tell my parents what I was doing lol.

Tech support, customer service, etc. all sound like valid ideas. The problem is finding them, and finding ones that I'm eligible for. I don't the classifieds in the paper have telecommuting jobs listed. If they do, I'm sure a great deal of them are scams. I need to find something valid, and something that requires little experience. I'm a fast typer and good with documents, coding, everything related to the computer, etc., so there's a lot I could do.

Thanks for the survey experiment, I'll be sure to follow your progress.

Professional eBay seller - something I have considered many times in the past. The only real obstacle is finding the right product to buy and resell, something I could get cheap locally but sell for more online. Or I could make my own product, but, uh...that probably wouldn't be very successful. Any ideas for things I could possibly resell?

Right now the current goal is to find LEGITIMATE telecommuting jobs for which I'm actually eligible. If you have any idea where to look please post. I'm willing to accept minimum wage, but it needs to be a job that will accept a 17-year-old.

The other possibility is making money on my own, for example, eBay sellling, so if anyone has any ideas on how to do this with decent profit (selling things, etc.), please post!

Maybe I should make this the official making money thread.......

create some web sites with useful content and sign up for google adsense to make a little cash. you could also go into affiliate marketing with web sites.

learn about search engine optimization and get your sites into google. people will come, click on ads or buy stuff through your links. there is money to be made if you are willing to work at it.

Well, I'd be very willing to buy a domain and write a site with useful info. Problem is, I don't believe I'm an expert enough in any field to create a decent site about it on my own. With computers, writing reviews would be nearly impossible as I'd have to get the products, and I could write guides, but how many people would choose a guide written by a kid instead a well-crafted one like here at Anandtech? Maybe if I could find a good topic to make an entire site about.

Affiliate marketing is something I have really considered. Alienware has an affiliate program, I was thinking about joining that. What types of products do you think would be easy to sell door-to-door or online? I think that might be a good idea.

How about you get a real job, and start working you way up like the rest of the world.

The bullsh!t market of the 90s are over, welcome back to reality kid.

Well, I wasn't ever really in that "market," seeing as how even in 1999 I was only twelve years old. Were things different in the 90s? Were telecommuting jobs actually popular? I wouldn't know. I'm not trying to be skeptical or in a dream world here, I actually have no idea what's possible and what's not, which is why I came here. I don't intend to make hundreds a week selling things on eBay, or by taking surveys or something. I was just interested if there are some good other ways to make some dough, and was also wondering about the possibility of online jobs. I'm not saying they're definitely out there or anything. If you say they're not and I'm wasting my time, well then, I guess I'll take your advice and go out searching in my area.

So what do you all think? Is making money in other miscellaneous ways a waste of time to try? And are there any companies out there that offer real tech. support/customer service jobs online?

Thanks for the help!

You just have to be able to tell if something would sell well on eBay. Buy things online or at B&M. I'm probably making close to $3k for January just by selling stuff on eBay. Pretty good for maybe 1 hour of work a day!

$3,000 for the month of January alone? I congratulate you! Perhaps we should do some PMing here, I'm really interested in what you do.

I never thought buying the products originally online would work because, if you could buy them for that price, why would other people pay more on eBay? I guess the people that buy it are the ones that don't know about where you got it from. PM?

Also, what's B&M?

Oh...meaning...not online....got it, thanks. I thought it was a specific store, heh.

Anyway, the reason I'm putting a job outside of my home as a last resort is because the pay to work ratio would suck, and I know I would hate losing all the free time that I would, since I'm also in school seven hours a day. But, I realize that sometimes there is no other way to make money, and that's why I'm willing to do it if I have to. But I'm really interested in investigating some other methods first, before I go out and get a job, and that's why I started this thread.

There are really only two other options to make some money besides getting a normal part time job outside of your house. The first is working online, and the second is making money on your own. There are real telecommuting jobs out there in the world, but it appears that most of them are jobs that require specific skills, such as legal or medical backgrounds, and are thus jobs that I'm ineligible for. Plus, it also seems like a lot of them are jobs that must be done in the office first, and then, LATER, you can telecommute after they already trust you and know you. So, it MAY be possible to find an online job for myself that I'm capable of doing and can start immediately, but it'd be difficult, or maybe impossible, to find.

The second option is making money on your own. This could include building computers for people, washing cars, cutting grass, making a website and putting banners on it, etc. All of these methods could make money, but most likely not any more for the time you'd put into them than a regular job would make you. Plus, they're not steady income sources, which is a downfall. So, if I'm going to explore this category, the goal is to find work that would produce better pay than say, washing cars, or building computers or something. So far the only idea that really catches my eye in this category is eBay selling, which is why I want to look into it more. I need to find the right product, something that I can afford initially and then resell for decent profit. Can O Worms, any information you could provide would be great. Please PM or email me if you get the chance.

I gave in! Got some applications today. Mostly for stuff in storage rooms, or cashier jobs. I feel like such a sucker. $5.50/hour minus taxes. Oh well. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to find a better alternative sometime during my high school career.
