I have tried familysearch.org mainly, but I cannot find most of my ancestors. Neither of my grandmothers are listed, none of my grear grand parents are listed, and i cannot afford to pay for the expensive services out there.
ancestry.com is supposedly very good, but you have to pay. But they even have some info on my family, immigrants in the 40s with a very unusual last name. You can search and see what they have for free.
I've never found anything that was reasonably priced for me. I've heard the Fort Wayne, Indiana public library is really good though... not sure how reliable that information is though, never went there.

The only information I can find is a sporatic SS death index. Out of all my great grandparents and grand parents, only 3 are listed. Though I know for a fact they had SSNs, I have them.
