Anyone know of Free utility to convert video file formats?

I would like to be able to create some vcd's out of avi and mov files but i need to convert them to mpeg before I can burn them as a vcd. Or if anyone knows of an easier way to do this, feel free to let me know!!!

Theres a program that`ll convert AVI to MPEG, even it they are coded in divx/xvid/other, but dont know of any that does mov to mpeg.
The programs called tmpgenc.

Wow, a freeware editing question that I can't answer with "VirtualDub".

For .mov to MPEG, you'll probably have to suck it up and buy QuickTime Pro. The only other program that understands it that I've run into is the Bink & Smacker video tools, and they only output their own .bik files (and the executable versions)
