Anyone know of conflicts between Epox 8k7a and Geforce 3s?

Oh, sorry, here are my system specs.

Althon XP 1700
Epox 8k7a
256 megs Crucial pc 2700
(2) 30 gig HDDs
4x HP burner
300 watt enermax

Thanks!

Yes. I have a Geforce3 and an EPoX 8K7A. I used to have horrible IRQL or whatever bluescreen problems that randomly reboot my system. Couldn't play anything for six months 🙁 Luckily, I figured it out. I updated all of my drivers for my motherboard. Go get the latest 4-in01's at www.viaarena.com. Then update your graphics card to the latest detonators(30.82 I think but I heard they have bad performance, check out the 31.00's at Guru 3d).

You will be amazed at how much drivers can help. If this doesn't fix your problem, feel free to PM me anytime and i'll help you out as I have basically the same setup(sans CPU and RAM) as you.

I hope you get this problem resolved. It really was hell for me in those six months where I coulnd't play a game or surf the net without it restarting or freezing on me. I blame VIA for their crappy hardware. I'm never getting a VIA again(Don't quote me on that 😛 )

Peace man.

I thought it might have something to do with the power... but i turned on logs and logged all the power rails and didn't find a noticable dip in power before the crash.

I'm trying what you suggested. Thanks for the help, I will PM you if i need more!

UPDATE
I updated all drivers that I could find. My BIOS is the latest one for the 8k7a. I ran Battlefield 1942 (which is one of the games that is giving me trouble) and it restarted in about 5 seconds after loading the game. This is even worse then before. Before I could play for some time before it would restart... now it just does it within 5 seconds of playing. I will try other games as well.

Here is a piece of my log from MBM.

You can see the 5 volt rail is alittle low (4.76 right before crash), but the highest it ever is is 4.78 and it was running at 4.76 for a few seconds before it rebooted.

It's the PSU I'm sure. You can't run a XP 1700 and spin two hard drives on a 300 watt PSU. My Antec 300 watt PSU is certified by AMD only up to 900MHz or something.

The 4.76V figure is the clue. 5% below spec is too much. Get a certified PSU for your CPU.

I was thinking that may be it. However, the computer DOESN'T crash every time the PSU goes that low. When I was just playing EE the 5 volt line dropped to 4.71. The computer didn't crash. I don't know much about PSUs or power, but to me that would indicate perhaps it is another issue?

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Well, people have already tackled the power supply. If that's not the case, and it's a HUGE if, i'd check the ram. Try out another psu if you can, though.

I think it is related to the power supply. Enermax PSU's have low 5v rails. This is not good, especially for the stability of AMD based systems. EPoX boards in particular seem to have problems coping with this fact. Try a different PSU and see what happens.

The only Epox mobo that was sensitive to the low +5v rail of the Enermax PSU's was the 8K7A/8K7A+. IT used a cheap bi-phase power solution that was very sensitive to certain PSU's. Epox has never used that bi-phase design on any other boards. All of their boards after the 8K7A, starting with KT266 based 8KHA used a much better tri-phase solution. The problems the 8K7A had with Enermax PSU's has led some people to believe all Epox boards do this..but it simply isn't true.

🙂

So could you guys recommend a new PSU for me? I'm completely clueless when it comes to them. Also anyone know how much I could get selling this PSU? It's in great shape, just been used for a while.

Thanks!

Wow. I also have a 300 watt enermax PSU and it wasn't the problem for me, it wa faulty drivers. Hmmm...Go into your BIOS and change the "System Speed" or something, forgot what it was really called, from Fast to Normal. If it is already on Normal, I think there is a setting for "Failsafe defaults." It's been a long while before I messed with the BIOS so I'm not sure. Try taking out one Hard drive and seeing how it works. If it works with a hard drive it is probably your PSU. Sorry I couldn't help you 🙁

I have been using a 8k7a and VisionTek GF3 for some time and have had no problems (Antec PSU).

One thing I did notice at the time of installation was that the VT manual made it a point to say the card should not be sharing an IRQ with any other devices except PCI Steering or ACPI IRQ holder for PCI steering. Also, they said the IRQ should be #11 if possible.

This was the first thing I checked. The graphics card is on IRQ 11 and is not sharing it with any other devices. I have a feeling the people here are right.. my 5volt idles around 4.8, and dips as far as 4.6 when playing games. Far too low to retain stability.

Thanks guys, looks like a new powersupply for me 🙂 (Anyone interested in an Enermax PS? 😉)
