I had an RX for Xanax for many years. About 6 months ago, I stopped taking them. I am on an SSRI already, but sometimes my anxiety kicks in.

I was hoping to find some suggestions to talk with my doctor about. He is very supportive of me trying different things but has told me that his experience in treating anxiety is limited. I actually turned down an RX for Xanax last time I went in to see him. He agreed that he would rather not see me on them, but he would give me them if I felt I needed them.

So does anyone know of anything like Xanax that is not a benzo? Basically something to take the edge off when anxiety creeps up? Of course alcohol or MJ is not an option....might as well get that out of the way.

Thanks!

can you get a reference to another doc who has some experience dealing with anxiety treatments?

i knew someone who switched anti anxiety meds and said what she switched to made a huge difference for her, but i could never keep up with what medications she took aside from melatonin, an SSRI and something for ADHD. id ask her...but she wont respond, shes gotten rather difficult to get in touch with.

I live in small town USA. I can't even find a psychiatrist in the area. I have to bounce between 2 counselors and my doctor. The counselors make suggestions and then I run them by my doctor. Its a rather drawn out process...

Honest question rudeguy. What don't you like about the xanax?

I have a rare attack, usually stress induced. I have a script for .25mg xanax (and I know that's very mild), I've only taken it 2 or 3 times in 2 months. I'm just wondering if there are side effects that I should be looking for.

yes, i know Ritalin and adderall are stimulants.
the anxiety comes from an anxiety disorder that has nothing to do with the ADHD meds.

I considered that, but the refusal of the prescription made me think that it was something different.
