Its a lot easier than you think. Just put a little dab on the core, get a credit card or some sort of card and spread it evenly on the core. Whatever you don't need will end up on the card.

I`ve found a toothpick works extremly well also (when done just throw it away... cant do that with the CC...) But as said a dab will do ya...

You can also use a plastic baggy to spread it out.

I have a bunch of old phone cards, and gift cards from blockbuster leftover that I use to spread it with. it's nice cause it's got a smooth and flat surface.
