Anyone know of an internet "keep Alive" program?

This is a wierd problem, but my isp has recently begun timing out, when it detects that I am not using the service. This is causing me problems on large downloads, as I can only get about 60mb of a 300mb file. It doesn't matter what site or when I am downloading, but it seems that about 60mb is all I can get out of a download. Usually, when I come back, if my screensaver is active, my download has stopped. Any ideas? BTW, I am on DSL. If I try and go to a website, it normally fails, then gives me the message that "no internet connection is currently available". When I click the "try again" button, then a page will open, and connection as usual.

FREEPING is what I used to use w/my SWBell DSL. They would drop my IP after about five minutes of non-activity..no kidding. :(

Freeping does exactly what it says it does; pings any IP addy or URL at the time intervals you require. It's great....simply put.

Hmmm, thats weird. DSL is supposed to be "always on" right? How could it timeout due to inactivity if so? I've never had broadband but my dialup ISP will disconnect me with no activity in 5 or 6 minutes so I just set OE to check the mail every couple of minutes. Dunno if that would be an option for you.

Always on isn't always "always on", especially if you have PPPoE.

Apparently, you missed the POMP! (point of my post)

The file always stops, or times out at 55-60mbs. When you are downloading a 300mb file, this is a problem. I cannot resume the download, when an FTP client is not required, and instead all you do is right click and save target.

well I can't help you with the timing-out problem, but I can say that Download Accelerator Plus (there's a free version w/ some ads -- it's very unobtrusive, the ads only show when you're using DAP) will allow you to resume broken downloads from the Web, as well as possibly substantially increasing d/l speed if the file resides on multiple servers.

I just changed my DSL modem into a professional version (just a few settings reachable by telnet) and told it to automatically reconnect if the link dropped. Works fine.

Of course you'd have to be so lucky to have a modem with which that is possible. Look around on the web to see if yours can be modded.

If you use Outlook Express, you can leave it open and set it to check for new mail every 3 or 5 minutes (instead of default 30 minutes) which will simulate activity.

I do this on my dialup connection at work on my second PC and stay connected for exactly 12 hours at a pop...

Best part of it is that you don't have to install any additional software and you get new mail faster.

I have the same problem with my ISP; they disconnect after 20 minutes of inactivity. But since I always seem to be FTPing, I just leave Flash FXP open and connected to one of my sites. It has an anti-idle feature that I have set to every 2 minutes.

mIRC usually ping/pongs the server you're connected to, it's enough to keep me on the net (56k though) for a good solid couple hours if nothing else is being downloaded
