Anyone know of an Email forwarding service that is FREE, RELIABLE and SPAM-LESS?

So, I am searching for an email forwarding service that is Free, Reliable and wont send me spam. I do not have my own domain name or anything, which seems to be a requirement of some forwarding services (like zoneedit). I would just like somewhere that I can trust that will forward mail to my ATT Broadband account... In case you're wondering why I just don't use the ATT account its because I am planning to switch ISPs in a few months and don't feel like changing the email address that I give everyone. I figure that if I can find a good place then I can just use that forwarding address for the next couple years, while changing the account on the end when ever I like.

Or, would it just be easier to register my own domain name and then use ZoneEdit to forward my email? Is there anywhere that you can register your own domain name for free? I am a bit naive about this subject, so all information you can help me with will be much appreciated.
