Anyone know of a good "undelete" program?

If it's not free, I'd rather not worry about it, but.. a friend of a friend has just recently deleted some information from MS-DOS that he would like to get back. I understand that you can "undelete" things if you try to recover it within a reasonable amount of time, and there's just a ton of undelete programs to choose from to download.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

To be clear, is this a Dos machine only? Can you be more specific about how these files were deleted and what operating system is on the system? I haven't heard of too many Dos-only machines out there.

The reason I'm asking is that there are file undeleters the run from Windows and there are some that run from CD/Dos, etc.

Ideally, you would want to find one that can be used as a plugin on a CD like BartPE. Barring that, you would want to find a program that can run off a bootable CD. The idea is to minimize any activity on the drive that has the lost files, so they are not overwritten.

If this is truly an MSDOS computer, then you can use the Dos Undelete command. See here:

If this is Windows, try something like http://www.officerecovery.com/freeundelete/. Take their advice and run the program from a Flash drive so it doesn't overwrite anything on the C: drive.

In a pure MSDOS world, I would find a copy of the DOS version of XTreeGold. It was acquired by Symantec. A Windows version, ZTree now exists. But, the old DOS XTGold had a very good undelete function. I used it for many years - still have the floppies.
