I found "mavis beacon teaches typing ver.15" (or maybe ver. 14 or 13 or 12...? ) in the clearance bin at Staples for $4.99.
Not free.... but darn close for a quality product.
I've frequently seen these on clearance shelves/bins.... so check em out. I'd bet any computer store has a "jewel case" version for $9.99 or less.

I used gtypist

It's a no frills type of thing.

It tells you the proper finger placement then has excercises that pretty much force you to use proper typing technics to get them done in time and within the maximum amount of errors allowed. (which is a small amount).

You take that and drill with it a hour or so everyday for a couple weeks you'll be a touch typist in no time.

It's not a kiddie program, which I find refreshing. No little cartoon rewards and cute stuff, you just drill until you get tired of it and do something else.

I use linux, and this is Free software (the capitol F = Freedom) so it's mostly Linux stuff, but they have binaries (programs) for Windows platforms in .zip archive downloads. (probably needs to be run from a dos window to work)

At here http://gtypist.org/

The first link (http://www.gnu.org/software/gtypist/gtypist.html) at the bottom of the page has links to quite a few other free software that is suppose to teach typing. Some will run in Windows, some will not.

Typershark is a fun game, and it should help you with your typing. I think you can change the difficulty if you download it.

Anybody ever play "Typing of the Dead"? I think it's some kind of FPS where you type to take-out zombies (IRRC, it was even available on the dear, old Dreamcast if you had the keyboard).

When I was a kid with an Apple ][e, there was an awesome game, "Mastertype". Blowing things up by typing correctly. I never got really good at it, but what typing skill I have now (touch-type, but incorrectly, go figure) I attribute to Mastertype.
