my son has really gotten into chess lately, i play him 2 or 3 games a day, but i'd like to get him a computer package also, so he can practice.

anyone know a good one for kids?

Windows XP has one for free, play online too I think.

EDIT: Nevermind. It was checkers, not chess.

That was an awesome chess game for the time. I'd like to see someone do a new version with all the new graphics and sound capabilities we have now.

If you want a chess-like sci-fi war strategy game for him to play, try Massive Assault. That's fun.

Chessmaster owns all.

Once he's reached an age where you're comfortable with him online - or perhaps with you supervising - go to FICS, get him an account, and let him put the smack down on some real live opponents. 😀

he's only 7 now, so i want him to get comfortable developing some strategies before i take him to a tourney.

he is pretty good at capitalizing on mistakes.

Make sure he's got the endgame mates down. I've seen soooooo many games end in stalemate because neither kid knows how to win when they're down to two kings + pieces.

end game is next on my agenda.

he's starting to get the hang of trapping, using multiple pieces and Defense.

Awesome. There's all sorts of resources and books out there. As long as he enjoys it, he'll just keep learning. My older brother's an IM (International Master) so I at least know what I'm talking about. 😉

cool

he really enjoys it, but i think part of it is he knows he has my time exclusively, but i think he is really enjoying it tho and the better he gets at it, the more he'll enjoy it.
