anyone know of a free SMTP server? or how to make my own?

I still use my ISP's email address, but I don't use their connection anymore since I am at college, so to send mail I have to log on and all that bullsh!t on the web instead of just through outlook.

Are there any SMTP servers out there that accept any users?


I tried setting up my own server, very unsuccessfully, with PostCast Server. Let me know if you know anything.

positive, I have tried many, many times. You have to be on their connection to use it.


But just to be sure, what do you mean by authenticate?
 
Most ISPs restrict their SMTP servers to their own IP range. This prevents non-customers from leeching their SMTP resources. As Heisenberg said, your college's SMTP server should work just fine.

The reason they require authorization is because of spammers, un-authorized senders, etc. It's a good thing.

I don't think my college has one, and even if they did i'm not sure if my IP would work, because I live on campus, but in an apartment.


Also, heisenberg, what forum should this go in? asking if anyone knows a free SMTP server? I think this is the only one that fits


Right now, my ISP is Birch.NET, but i use an SBCGlobal.net e-mail address, and I have no idea what birch.net's SMTP is or how to find out, my apartment complex get's a t1 line from them.

why don't you just try putting in "mail" in the smtp server field. That is what I did with my ISP.

will that still work, even though I am not using a birch.net e-mail? I tried it, and it sent, but I dont think it really sent, or it is taking a long ass time to get through their server.

It should. In essence, if you use the POP server of your email provider and the SMTP server of your ISP, you should be fine for sending and receiving mail.
