Anyone know of a forensics/rescue live CD with a desktop env?

I've been looking but without much success. Anybody got a link to something like this? Needs to have NTFS access, too.

Thanks.

Yikes, lxskllr! That's a Winders utility...

Did you mean: UBCD

He was talking about NTFS support. I took that to mean he had to rescue Windows. It's not an all-in-one solution, but it's one of the best for fixing Windows. I figured the penguins could fill in the gap for Linux. Put them both on a bootable USB with a menu, and you've got everything covered.

Looks like it already includes ntfs-3g, thanks!
You're welcome!

Maybe I didn't express it sufficiently, in that post...

Yes, SystemRescueCD includes ntfs-3g but...

You need to implement ntfs-3g in CLI, while you're booting SystemRescueCD.

Actually, I *think* I've mounted ntfs partitions with read/write support using ntfs-3g AFTER the boot process (via terminal), but to be kosher, you should do it during boot-up.

Does that make more sense? :sneaky:

Talking about UBCD...

UBCD is my weapon-of-choice, when everything else fails (no pun intended). I consider it the 'nuclear option'.

UBCD contains a collection of nasty, industrial strength, utilities -- most of which work at a hardware level.

It isn't for the faint of heart, but if you know what you're doing (and what you're looking for) it surely beats surfing the web, looking for obscure utilities.

i would try Hiren's BootCD
what it is:
http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd
where to get it:
http://www.hirensbootcd.net/download.html?ver=10.6

it has many utilities to repair, recover and destroy anything windows related
it has a bart pe like windows xp live version and most utilities can be accessed via dos utility as well

iso image should be burned to cd to boot to cd
if you are handy and have a minute, he has a tutorial to make it bootable on a usb stick as well :)

Never heard of it...

Is this illegal software?

I just logged into Wikipedia, and it seems rather suspect.

EDIT

Whoops!

Just answered my own question... LoL!

Hirens is largely warez. It has free, as well as non-free utilities.
Thanks!

Just ran across an entry on the Spanish site (see above)...

LoL! Well, let your conscience be your guide, I guess.

There's NO WAY you should use something like that at work...

besides, as it mentions in wikipedia, all possible licensing infringements have warning labels so it is up to you to decide if you go ahead and do that or not.
i think it's kind of harsh to call it warez. the only questionable software pieces i found in there are the password crackers.
there is nothing virus or malware laden on the cd and the content is clear to read.
it's really just a glorified bart pe and can do nothing more or less.

btw, bart pe would be an option too but it could be a pain to get it together and working the way you need it

Gracias pero no soy español.
I am not spanish altough i live in Spain.
I discovered these two distro after i was offered a*job* to recover some importatnt data.
No need to thank me,knowledge is something i like to share.
I am by no means a Linux CLI master or advanced user, just a computer user always hungry for more open software.

Another vote for SystemRescueCD. It has done everything I have ever needed it to do. You have to manually start the graphical environment, but all that takes is a "startx".
