My brother-in-law is applying to NYU and is going for his interview with them this weekend. He's an aspiring actor so he'll be attending the school of drama along with the business school.

Anyone know much or have much experience with NYU that I can share with him to help him make his decision on where to attend college?

Thanks.

it is what it is, a institution that's got a lot of money, seems to have a lot of cheesy on campus student jobs that seems like a public works program just to employ students... a place that attracts kids and adults from all over USA w/ parents w/ deep pockets... a place where if you never attended / registered for a load of classes, you can still be plenty busy if you bark up all of the happenings and events of the school...

and a place where if you get a practical degree, many publicly held corporations come to campus to recruit from... you can't say the same for every school out there.

I graduated from NYU in 2000. Most of my friends from NYU, as well as myself, have pretty successful careers. Unfortunately one of my friends that is having difficulty is the one that went to Tisch school for acting. He's in insurance now.

Very strong alumni network in the City. It's an expensive school and only worth that tuition if you major in business or some other major with $$ potential.

Otherwise, save the buck and go State (i.e. Albany, CCNY).

NYU has really good performance arts program. It costs a ton of cash and their residence halls sucks and cost a shitload. But it's a lot of fun because you're in the heart of the west village.

Also their B school is so-so at best (def not worth the money) and dept of Economics is about the same. However they do have a nice MA program for econ.

<- applying for grad MS program at NYU... one of the few schools that have econ MA.

As an NYU student, I can say that it's only worth the money if you know what you're getting into. The Math and CS departments (both are my majors) are very good, plus it has a high post-graduation employment rate. Plus, if you can deal with ridiculous cities like NY, there's no place like it. Be warned, NYU has the highest freshman transfer OUT rate in the country, due to the fact some people just can't handle living in NY.

Every other school looks down on Tisch students though. In the end, Tisch students either make it big (small percentage) or make it in another field. Tell him to be ready to study something else while he does his drama classes. I doubt he'll be able to double up in Stern and Tisch, but if he can, good luck to him. Stern can wear a man down, and Tisch takes hours and hours out of one's day. Would be a difficult combination.
