Anyone know much about knees?

Made it through three days (overall 12 games -- 2+ hours per game -- in the last week) of tough ultimate over the weekend, and in the last game I made a diving bid for a disc. Got up, and even though I was gimping beforehand, I was much worse off after I got up.

I finished the game, but my knee is giving out a lot right now. No swelling, so I hope the injury isn't that bad -- but it still sucks. :|

Anyone know enough about leg injuries to give me a bit of knowledge? The soreness (located by poking and prodding) seems to be near the top-outside of the calf. If anyone knows a lot about knees, I could take a pic and point out the location of the injury.

I'm hoping it isn't anything major -- hopefully not an ACL injury, hopefully not a ligament injury in general. I can walk on it, but I'm limping pretty badly. I know the general advice is to see a doctor, but my last ligament injury sent me back several thousand -- and that was WITH insurance (which I unfortunately don't currently have). Just looking for feedback from others who have had injuries in the past.

Take a pic please I don't know a lot about knees but having injured my own (torn cartilage playing Volleyball) I know enough to say what it's not 🙂

Top outside of the calf would probably be the LCL if it was any sort of ligament injury. It may just be a muscle pull or something like that as well, but only a doctor would be able to tell you something like that. I would say just rest and ice your knee and if it doesn't feel any better or if the pain gets worse (I'm assuming it hurts a bit now) in a couple of days, go see a doctor as knee injuries are not something to mess around with.

If you have had ligament issues with a knee in the past, then you know how it feels when your knee moves out of socket. I have torn ACL, meniscus, in my right knee.

No swelling though. Perhaps just a bone bruise? Or even your patella tendon perhaps?

I have had swelling whenever cartilage or ligaments were involved.

i had knee problems when i was younger. i played soccer a lot and my fallen arches were causing the bones in my knees to grind and create bruises inside. it wasnt like what you were describing tho

Will do. There's no discernable swelling, but basically I'm just looking to hear stories of those who have injured LCL's, ACL's, cartilege, etc., so I can get an idea for what this might be. The only thing that would require a doc is likely the ACL -- the rest can heal pretty easily on its own, depending on the severity.

See a doctor.

ATOT is not a doctor.

Read my post. :|

That's what free clinics are for...or if you have doctor-friends. 🙂

Haven't found any free clinics that will treat sports-related injuries. For stuff like the ACL, LCL, MCL, etc., they just tell you to wait 6 weeks (since it isn't a life-threatening emergency). And alas, no doctor friends (yet). 😀

I have had swelling when ever cartilage or ligaments were involved.

Outside of the calf, is that the PCL?

Outside of the knee is the LCL, inside of the knee is the MCL, and the ACL and PCL go through the middle of the knee in kind of an X shape.

Ok, that's pretty much the advice I expected. Like I said, hoping it's not the LCL (did my MCL last year, the pain on this is worse but that one lasted several weeks). Hoping that it could just be a weird muscle pull (hamstrings are already out of whack in that leg, been treating those). Was thinking perhaps a slight injury to the IT band or a bruised tendon...time will tell.

Wish I knew of more resources for the insurance-less. I'm already in debt from my last trip to the ER. :|

I tore my MCL and PCL playing soccer about 4 years ago. After it happened, I couldn't walk on it without severe pain and there was a ton of swelling. It also felt like my knee was loose. If I tried to take a step forward with my right leg (the injured one), it felt like my knee was wobbling and sliding around.

I was just at my doctor because I've also have a bad knee after playing Volleyball. What she did was to try and pull and twist the lower half of my leg to see if the knee joint was able to flex in a way it shouldn't do. She couldn't find anything and nothing showed up on the X-ray, but it still hurts 🙁

I've pretty much have done everything to my right knee, and anytime it was serious there was swelling, the most swelling was when I fractured my patella and bruised my tibia. Like others have said, just rest and ice it.
