I've been trying to learn it but it's pretty confusing and at times, dull. I know the finished product is a payoff which is why I'm trying to learn it. Any tips or websites that'll help?

It confused the hell out of me last time I tried to learn it. I'm gonna give it a go again sometimes soon.
If you BUY it with the cs it comes with a book.
If you didn't, a quick search on Kazaa will find you very good introductory pdfs

I tried working with the Personal Learning Edition for a bit, but it just seemed harder to use than 3dsmax. Some say it's more powerful, though, so I would like to learn it sometime (in my spare time).

I am learning it right now...it's a lot easier than lightwave...very intuative..but take a trip to borders and go through the books...also there are tons of tutorial sites online ...send me your email in a PM and I will send you a huge list of links..

Thats economic theory and not law. There are exceptions to this theory. I still pay for games. I know that a quick search on kazaa / Direct Connect would get me the same game in about a half hour. I still dont do this.
