I have a combined driver's license and motorcycle permit from out of state

I surrendered my old license and I forgot to mention my motorcycle permit

Does it expire or is it permanent? Because I won't be owning a motorcycle for a while so I'll let it expire, but if it's permanent part of my license I want to transfer to the new license

Permits expire, a motorcycle endorsement does not.

I have a motorcycle license....

Then it depends on your new state's laws but, generally, the license should transfer. I just have never heard of a separate license being issued for motorcycles. What state did you come from?

sorry for the confusion, the licenses weren't separate
I should go back to the dmv and get it transferred since it never expires

Ok, now I'm really confused. You surrendered your old license which included your motorcycle endorsement but didn't get it transferred to your new license? Oh man, I forsee you having to retake the motorcycle test to get it put on your new license which will also require you to pay for the endorsement.

My Dad came to Texas in the mid 80s and previously had a motorcycle license in Illinois. He still has the motorcycle "code" on his Texas license today, so I'm pretty sure it lasts forever.

Well, it can't hurt to ask but, I believe you're out of luck. Once a new license is issued, the old one is null and void and the DMV doesn't care what was on your old license. You have to make sure all endorsements are transferred at the time of receiving the new license barring any specific requirements of the new state issuing the license.

No idea how your DMV works. In my province, the drivers and motorcycle license is one. You lose one, you lose the other (unless you're still on probation for one of them).

Here in CA it is a specific endorsement on your drivers license.

Mine says Class: C M1 Class C is for cars/trucks (non-commercial) and M1 is for operating a motorcycle of any class.

I have a motorcycle endorsement on my MS drivers license. It costs $1.00 extra for 4 years. I sold my bike years ago but keep the endorsement so I don't have to get re-certified if I decide to buy a bike. Its only .25 cents a year to keep the endorsement.

I've never really thought about it, I just renew my DL every 4 years and the Motorcycle endorsement(I got it when I was 14 so I could ride a small bike around town and it morphed into a regular DL when I turned 16(got a learner's permit at 15) and took the driving test) is still there. I have never moved though.

Yes and no. It doesn't expire, but when you renew your license you likely have to pay to keep the endorsement or you lose it. YMMV

I had a motorcycle endorsement in high school. Moved out of state for college and continued to live out of state for almost 10 years. When I moved back in state and renewed my license, my motorcycle endorsement remained. I never even asked about it, and was surprised to see it.
