Anyone know if they still make an air conditioner like this?

when i was a kid, our family had this air conditioning device (about the size of a mini fridge) that used water to spew out cool air. there was a input thing where youd add the water in the back of the unit.

threw it out years later cuz of abuse from my siblings stuffing paper/etc where you fill it with water..

wouldnt mind getting something like that for the summer..

I've often heard of a thing called a box evaporator, could this be it? Works like you said, uses water to cool the room rather than an exchange of hot/cold freon to coils/compressor outside. I've always been keen on finding one, but have never seen one for sale :(

Did that thing have to have an external part (like outside the house) or was it just something you could stick in the middle of the room? I'd like one.

ah.. swamp cooler.. is that what their called.. ill ask around..

bruno: no external part to stick outside. it was a standalone unit. had rollers to move around the room basically anywhere as long as the power cord was long enuff..

wish we hadnt messed it up so bad.. :(

They are known as Desert Coolers or Humidifers.

They still make them, and I know fry's carries them. They are good for dry regions like AZ and interior areas.

Would this thing be like a humidifier? Would they be safe to put in a room with a ton of electronics (computers, monitors, tvs, vcrs, dvd, etc)?

Never heard of this but I used to hang my Misty Mate on the grill of my fan....that was pretty intense.
Don't do it near electronics, though :)
