Anyone know if theres a way to disable the outside buttons

I keep somehow turning off my ringer just by pure chance while it's in my pocket by the buttons on the side getting hit in the just right combination, resulting in my ringer being turned off and my fiancee going into panic mode thinking I'm dead or something.

I'll usually only notice when I go to use my phone hours later and see I have like 5 missed calls from different people.

Anyone know if this is possible?

If you flash it over to Alltel, as I have, you can just lock the Ring Styles application--no more accidental ring setting changes. 🙂

How hard is it to do this? Does it matter if you have US Cell, Verizon, or is it not service provider dependant?

Well I'm not looking to flash my phone just to stop this from happening, not work the warranty void IMO.

Any other suggestions?

1. use a holster
2. stop wearing those tight tight leather pants
3. encapsulate the buttons in epoxy
4. physically remove the buttons
5. use a holster
6. I like your pants

There's a way to do it on the E815, it makes it so that when an outside button is pressed, it just says "Enter Unlock Code." I'm at work so I can't help much more than that, but its in the instruction manual if you search.

I would think US Cell phones, like Alltel, would not sport the 'Flash' interface Verizon V3c/V3m's make use of. In that case, you should already have access to the same Motorola OS everyone outside of Verizon customers use. Then it becomes just a somewhat labyrinthine task of navigating the menu maze over to the 'Lock Applications' feature.

I would think should you find it worthwhile to check out the Alltel firmware on your phone, my guess would be that it should work just fine regardless of provider. The only catch would be in returning the phone to its original state for warranty purposes, etc. You'd need a copy of the firmware currently on the phone. Every firmware to appear on Verizon's V3c's has been released, as has every Alltel firmware that I know of, so there is no issue with either of those providers naturally.

Sounds like a question for HowardForums. 🙂

Check out the Verizon-to-Alltel Wiki and see if it's worth the effort. It was for myself and many other V3c users. The only difficulty may be in tracking down all the software required, assuming you already have a suitable USB cable on hand. I may be able to help in the software dept. should you decide to take the plunge...

P2K Menu Editor has a sub-tool where you can remap the keys. It appears to work by SEEM editing 005B_0001.seem, which I believe is firmware-independent for at least some settings.

If you remap the "smart key" to n/a, you can accidentally enter the Audio Style menu, but you can't change the setting. This will disable the "smart key" at all times, but the volume keys will continue to work (useful when the phone is open).
