here's why i ask...

just got an XP1800 and i wanna use my "purple" shim i got from www.sidewindercomputers.com just cuz i'm using the Alpha PAL8045 cooler.

the tech rep w/ AMD said i dont need no shim but the thought of using such a heavy cooler like the PAL8045 w/o a shim scares me too much...

anyone using a shim on their XP with one of these "heavy" coolers?

i dont know anything about the "purple shim"

but... the tbird core is higher then the xp core, that means the shim cant be as thick or the hsf wont make good(or any) contact with the core

two methods to find out,

install said shim on new cpu with thermal paste, remove and check the paste pattern for the core and shim, both should be there. don't turn on system during check, obviously.

and, the other way is to use a straight edge wilst holding the cpu and shim up to a back light, out of motherboard, do this step even if the above paste pattern checks out okay, just in case you put the paste on too thick on the core.

of course, this means you will have to shell out for the shim and it may not work. you could call them too, maybe they have an answer or can check it out for you.

BTW, the shim i use on my Tbirdy is just a bit less thick than the core, so maybe, they will be a PERFECT match.

but i think you want the shim to be a tiny bit thinner then the core so there is good pressure between the heatsink and the core (there is supposed to be a good amount of pressure between the two)

I use my Purple Shim with my Danger Den Maze 2 waterblock -- I like to screw the block down really tight. It make great contact with the shim installed -- whenever I take the block off (I have swaped out my processor three times since I got my first 1800) I can see a nice neat square of ASII where the die was making perfect contact with the block.

In short -- the shim works fine (just make sure your heatsink exerts sufficient pressure to make good contact.
