Anyone know if a SATA PC will run a IDE hardrive and???

Actually some computers (some Dell models for sure) don't have any PATA (use PATA to differentiate from SATA as both are actually IDE technology) channels now. Several companies besides Plextor have started making SATA optical drives to supply this OEM market. But that Acer the OP linked has at least one PATA channel as you can see the wide cable in the picture gallery.
. IAC, you can get PATA to SATA adapters that work great with hard drives but can be iffy with optical drives. Here is one from Rosewill - I mention this one as it's the only (inexpensive) one that I'm sure comes with the Y cable so you can power both the adapter card (requires a floppy size power connector) and the drive from one PSU power connector.

Another option is to add some PATA ports via an add-on PCI adapter (plugs into a PCI slot and usually adds two PATA channels for up to 4 drives) - a good idea if you plan to use more than one PATA drive or a mix of HDDs and CD/DVD drives as one of these costs less than two PATA to SATA adapters and works well with all types of drives. I use the Syba SD-ATA133R. It has RAID capability too but you can ignore it if you don't need to use it. You can occasionally get a lemon but generally they are very reliable and flexible.
