you can either call cingular and get it (very unlikely) or take it to be unlocked at an independant shop or via a website. Those are the only ways that I know of to do it with a minimal risk of hosing the phone.

When I had my razr with t-mobile and I wanted it unlocked. I just called them and told them I was leaving the country and that I needed it to be unlocked so I could use it with other carriers.

Yup. That reason works. We have unlocked T-Mobile Blackberries at work since sometime people go out of the country. Just give them a good reason and they'll do it, assuming you've been with them for a while.

I've done it on a couple phones myself. I didn't even give a reason.

I've seen a lot of these unlocked razr's on ebay go for <250. What confuses me is that they list all carriers as compatible carriers, both gsm and cmda.

My question is , is it really possible to have a phone that works with all the carriers?

I have Verizon and I have another year until my NE2 upgrade.

Nope, the phone either supports gsm or cdma, not both.

easiest would be to plug a sim card from a different carrier. if it works, it's unlocked; if it doesn't, it's locked.
