Anyone KNow how to truely hack ?

True hackers work for big companies these days; the type of hacker you think of from the movies does not exist in that form.

You hear alot of DOS attacks, but that is not hard to do.

hacking,, such as defacing websites etc, can only be really done by two method - exploiting a vulnerable script or server or something, or social engineering.. most 'turki$h H4x0r omg!!' people just download scripts or use public exploits they didnt discover, or understand "script kiddy"

i guess i am a mix between script kiddi and hacker!! lol, i do know how to do the basic forms of attack (buffer overflows, sql injection, etc etc etc) but only for the challenge and fun mostly. i think sufficient mix of clever social engineering, use of exploits and willpower, can 'hack' anything

The 'real' hackers do it by social engineering mostly and apply scripts and code that someone else wrote.

If you have the skill to write scripts and code, it's safer and probably more profitable to work for someone or have your own legitimate business.

I am not any kind of hacker, but I used to print out the hex files of my characters in Dark Queen of Krynn and Secrets of the Silver Blades, and find where the characters attributes were. I hated getting poisoned. So I'd save the game, go edit the poison out, and keep playing. I had most of the items, conditions, and HP all mapped out. Was pretty fun actually.

The term 'hacking' can mean more than defacing a website or DOS'ing a server.

I hacked up my car's OS rather than pay the $tealer to do it. I didn't write any code to do it, but it was done with scant knowledge and it worked, so it was a hacked up job.

Cracking, on the other hand, is a whole different ball game.

/thread

That is pretty much exactly what is done in the world of penetration testing. The users are always the weakest link. It is just not profitable to go after some 0-day exploit that may or may not exist on a system when you can find passwords.txt.

You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

>cracker
A cracker is someone who breaks into someone else's computer system, often on a network; bypasses passwords or licenses in computer programs; or in other ways intentionally breaches computer security. A cracker can be doing this for profit, maliciously, for some altruistic purpose or cause, or because the challenge is there. Some breaking-and-entering has been done ostensibly to point out weaknesses in a site's security system.

The term "cracker" is not to be confused with "hacker". Hackers generally deplore cracking. However, as Eric Raymond, compiler of The New Hacker's Dictionary notes, some journalists ascribe break-ins to "hackers."

A classic story of the tracking down of a cracker on the Internet who was breaking into U.S. military and other computers is told in Clifford Stoll's The Cuckoo's Egg.

>hacker
Hacker is a term used by some to mean "a clever programmer" and by others, especially journalists or their editors, to mean "someone who tries to break into computer systems."

1) Eric Raymond, compiler of The New Hacker's Dictionary, defines a hacker as a clever programmer. A "good hack" is a clever solution to a programming problem and "hacking" is the act of doing it. Raymond lists five possible characteristics that qualify one as a hacker, which we paraphrase here:

* A person who enjoys learning details of a programming language or system
* A person who enjoys actually doing the programming rather than just theorizing about it
* A person capable of appreciating someone else's hacking
* A person who picks up programming quickly
* A person who is an expert at a particular programming language or system, as in "Unix hacker"

Raymond deprecates the use of this term for someone who attempts to crack someone else's system or otherwise uses programming or expert knowledge to act maliciously. He prefers the term cracker for this meaning.

2) Journalists or their editors almost universally use hacker to mean someone who attempts to break into computer systems. Typically, this kind of hacker would be a proficient programmer or engineer with sufficient technical knowledge to understand the weak points in a security system.

😀
We used a hex editor to modify a bit of text in Stunts, and fooled around with other games the same way.

I hack traffic lights so they are always green for me

And I hack police cars so they stall out when they try to chase me

I hack into your computer and control your lights, oven and sinks- even though none of them have any interface whatsoever to your computer.

what other funny things do we see in movies on 'hackers'...

Those were some good games. Man, I wish todays games wouldn't look so good but suck so much. *sigh*

That is a good read for any aspiring computer/network person. I highly suggest everybody read it 🙂

I'll tell you a god damn story, my ex girlfriend got her friend to hack into my hotmail account, delete all of my folders, change my signature to something like

David XXXX
Im gay
" "<<<< fill in the blank with homosexual sexual desires

Then the f^cker changes my calender to say the same thing every Monday,

"Gay time with Chris, his place as usual."

And he flooded my inbox with gay Pron.

Needless to say, this is now my spam email account.
