Just got a brand new DVD player that can play VCD's, CD-R's, and CD-RW's, and I want to rip a movie from a DVD , encode it to VCD format then burn it on a CD. Possible? Websites? Thanks guys.

DVD's are generally encrypted with a copy protection technology called CSS. The hacker/phreaker/cracker ezine 2600 published a link to a utility known as deCSS, which apparently unencrypts the DVD files to your hard drive.

A court ordererd 2600 to remove the link, in a move that some consider a violation of the 1st Amendment.

I don't know if the deCSS program is still out there, but it seems likely.

But then, if an average DVD movie is like 4 gigs, how big is it gonna be for the VCD? And how much do I need for swap space on my HD?

I think it is going to be compressed, so you lose a little quality. I'm guessing that you would probably put it on a few cd's. A little annoying but what the heck.
