Anyone know how to retrieve data from a dead HDD on the cheap?

An individual here toasted a laptop drive. We need to get the data off of it, but I was hoping there was some other way instead of sending it off and paying $1500 (Which is cheaper than I thought it would be). But I was just wondering if anyone here knew of any tricks or had any tips. Anyone?

I have heard putting into the freezer for a few minutes help getting the motor running again for a few minutes so you can copy the data to another disk, havent tried it myself though

If it's just a bad board you may be able to get an identical hdd and swap the boards.
If it's mechanical though...

Yep, what's the problem, does it not spin up? You can try varying degrees of impact as a last resort, sometimes a few wacks will get 'em going... especially if we are talking about 199x 10MB RLL/MFM Drive.

You might be able to open it up and spin start it manually. Eventually dust will render stuff unreadable, but, maybe able to get what you need that way.

Either of the above would be considered a final st4b before the trash bin though.

Thanks guys. BTW, it's not spinning up, so it may be a bad logic board. However, we just got approval to blow the money on it, so off she goes.

exactly what I came in here to say.. We have had a bunch of laptop hdds go bad.. Just a quick switch of the control board and they are running again.. But if it is going click-click-dunk you might be screwed!

Mine goes click-click-click-thunk, am I screwed then?

Dammit, are pics and some files worth $1500 to me...

well not screwed, but it might cost you to have data pulled off.

I would suggest trying the freezer thing, and if it works pull all data off immediately.

Cool. Hope it works out. My father went through a data recovery place once and it costs $$ for that, as you already know....

On a side note, he said that they had a hard drive there that had been seized in a kiddie porn raid, but the guy had taken a shotgun to it before the cops got to him. Needless to say, the HD looked like Swiss cheese. :Q

Haha, I bet they had fun trying to get data off of that.

That's crazy.

Bring it to the RIAA, say you think there will be a lot mp3s on it, and that they can sue for a lot of money if they get it working again.

😛

Or try replacing parts of it if you are good at working with electronics and don't mind the chance of destroying another harddisk.
If it's the mechanical part then you are most likely screwed.

Place it under your pillow and hope that the data retreavel fairy pays you a visit..

Might want to find another one of them and just switch out the platters.

P.S. Might want to keep static and dust away while doing this.

Might want to wait until you finish eating your PBJ too... 😉

Be very careful of springs as well
