I don't know if I've been hacked but I tried going into my router but my password no longer works.

I know this router gets hit all the time because I am on a cable modem and the activity light is on all the time.

If you know you are getting 'pinged', or scanned, then please go here, and learn all you can about your router.

Link

It will show you step-by-steps on how to configure that router properly, and even show you how to setup port/icmp filters.

Have fun. :)

Thanks. I have been on that site. But there is nothing there that I saw on how to reset the router.

I know the default setting is admin 1234 but I'm positive I changed the password and I still can't get into the router no matter what passwords I use.

I think its posted on Netgears site! Your going to need a 'null modem cable' and use hyper terminal!

I changed my pass then forget the code had to do this to reset the firmware!
I use the RT314 and ZyXEL ZyWALL 10

FROM NETGEAR's Site:

Question:
What is the procedure for uploading the firmware in the router?

Answer:
Upgrading the firmware of the router is the process of uploading a binary file (having ext ?.bin?) to the router using terminal emulation program such as HyperTerminal or ProComm etc.

To upgrade the router, the user must make a serial connection to the Manager port on the rear of the RT314. The upgrade procedure consists of putting the RT314 into boot mode, and then sending it, the new software image using a terminal emulation program, which supports an XMODEM transfer of a binary file.

Upgrade Procedure:
Click on Start Menu, go to Programs, then Accessories and in Communication select HyperTerminal.
In Connection Description enter a name; lets say your name. Click on OK.
In Connect To window select ?Direct to COM1? in Connect using, and click on OK.
In COM1 Properties set the values as given below:
Bits per second 9600
Data bit 8
Parity None
Stop bits 1
Flow control Hardware

Click on OK.
Now a HyperTerminal Screen will display.
Power cycle the router and when the power is turned on, you will notice the session completing a test. When the session window says ?PRESS ANY KEY TO ENTER DEBUG WITHIN 3 SECONDS? press any key. If you are late pressing any key then re-cycle the power and try again.
Once you enter the debug mode type the command ?atur? and press ENTER, try to write this as soon as possible. Then you will get the message as ?Starting XMODEM upload (CRC mode)?.When you start getting characters like ?CCCCCC??CCC? on the screen go to the TRANSFER option on the top menu bar and click on ?Send File? & select Browse.
Now browse the bin file (e.g. 314v325.bin ) file. Now change the protocol to XMODEM and click on Send button. This process will take about 10 minutes to finish.
Restart router by typing 'atgo' (without the single quotes) and striking ENTER.
Now the router have new firmware version, and ready to use.

This should help if not ask this question at DSLreports or read
the FAQ they have posted!

Thanks NuLLxXx!

I didn't know putting in new firmware also reset the router. But do you need to know the password if you want to install firmware?

Well this is the way I was told from Netgear's Tech help! It's also referenced in the support pages on
the website! I just posted the instructions that the tech note referenced....

When you install both the bin file ( 314v325.bin ) and the rom file ( romfile0.314 )..... all settings are
replaced.....

HyperTerminal is a work around you can load the bin and rom file without needing a password! This
procedure is also on the Netgear CD packaged with the Router..... in a Adobe PDF file......

The bin file is the routers OS, the rom file is your settings including your password if you have a copy
of the same firmware your using you could just load the rom file!!!!

So get a null modem cable, fire up HyperTerminal and get cracking....
