I'm looking for a tool that can tell me the IP or the MAC address of machines on my network that are hogging bandwidth so I can go smack the user across the face and stop them from bogging down our internet connection.

Any suggestions?

Do you have a firewall? Sometimes they will have a report/logging tool in them that tracks how much bandwith certain IP's are using for various services.

I'm not very familiar with cisco products, but flip through the manuals for traffic monitoring. That should point you in the right direction.

If you have control of your router you can log in and probably run a top or ntop style command on them to view which IPs/MACs are using the most bandwidth at any given time.

If you have a sniffer, you can use it to gather data. Connect it to a port on your switch and set it to span the switch port that connects to your firewall. That'll show you all the traffic going to the Internet, and you'll see what IP's are sending the most traffic. From there, it's LAN detective work to see who has what IP.

The only problem with Ethereal is that it provides VERY limited functionality on reporting the basics beyond packet captures. You'd really need to use something like Sniffer Pro in order to get any relevant traffic information.
