I can't connect with my friends to warcraft or send file through instant message because of my firewall. Any one out there now how to disable it? Any help will be greatly apprecitated. I am using window 2000, with a smc router. Please let me know if there is anything else you would need to know to help? Thanks

Disabling firewall? No. Bad n00b. /smack

What you want to do is forward ports. The router doesn't know that the string of data flowing in for port XXX isn't a 1337 h4x0r d00d trying to get in, so it stops it cold.

Look in the SMC webconfig for "Address Management" or "Network Forwarding" or "Port Bindings" - something like that. You'll have to put in the port number (depends on the application, Google it or check the help documentation) and the destination internal address (your machine)

So it will look like:

External port _____ [ ] TCP [ ] UDP
Interal address ___.___.___.___ port _____

Something to that effect.

BTW, welcome. 😉

Start -> settings -> control panel -> add/remove software. Search for the firewall product you installed, select it, and click on the remove button. You did not mention which firewall you installed, so more help is a little tough. Although, MercenaryForHire probably answered your question.

YOU CAN NOT TURN THE FIREWALL ON A CABLE/DSL ROUTER OFF.

No Firewall No NAT, No NAT No Routing, No Routing you do not need a Router.

You have three options:

1. Get rid of the Router.

2. You can open all the ports, a process that is called to put the computer on the DMZ (De Militarized Zone) i.e. no military no one is protecting you. Under this setting one of your Network computers is out in front of the Firewall.

3. Open the ports that are necessary for a specific application.

The way to open a port depends on the Router, and or Firewall program. Each manufacture has his own "Shticks" to go about it. Each one has his way of organizing the Menus. You have to read the Manual in order to know how to do it. The term that it is referred to could be Port Mapping, Port Opening, etc. In a Virtual Server.

List of ports that are associated with various applications can be found here:

Special Applications - Port List.
