Anyone know how to get rid of mercury? *resolved*

A friend asked me what he should do with two vials of mercury that he ended up with after buying and cleaning out an old tool cabinet.

Anyone know where we can call about that stuff so it can be properly disposed of?

Mercury is a hazardous waste. It affects the nervous system. It is a 6.1 Toxic by DOT regulations. You should take it to a household hazardous waste facility. Call your local solid waste authority and ask. Do not throw it away or pour it down a drain.

Call whatever amounts for a HazMat division in your state. No joke. I'm sure they'd be happy to come out and pick it up rather than risk him taking it to a disposal facility and spilling it on the way.

Contrary to the popular belief, you can actually intake some mercury without any harm to the body. It's not the mercury itself that is so deadly, but mercury fumes when it starts evaporating and reacting with oxygen.

Thanks for the responses and it turned out to be a happy ending. After calling everyone I could think of and getting turned down, I called my state representative and explained the situation. He called me back a couple hours later and gave me the name of someone in the state Dept. of Environmental Resources office who said I could take it to their office.

Funny, when *I* called that office, I was told no. But the state rep's office calls, and all of a sudden it's OK? Maybe there's a secret code word I was supposed to use. Oh well, it worked out.
