I hope i didn't confuse anyone but how would I go about removing one of the OS options on my dual boot screen when my computer starts up? Right now I have WinXP and Win98 and want to get rid of the Win98........

Thanks in advance!

edit the file "boot.ini" in your c: root directory. it's a hidden system file, so you'll have to enable "show all files" in the folder options menu.

in windows 98, edit the hidden BOOT.INI
you'll also need to turn off the read only attribute, then add it again when you're done.

boot.ini is used for the dual boot of 98 and win2k OR XP

so that is what you want to edit

Yes, I selected "show hidden files".

here's what mine looks like:

[boot loader]
timeout=12
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server" /fastdetect
C:\ = "Microsoft Windows 98"

in this case, you would remove this line:

C:\ = "Microsoft Windows 98"

you're should be almost identical. so that's what you would do. make a backup of the file first though just to be safe

Yup, mine is identical......

So say I eventually wanted to throw win98 back on and have it dual boot, would all I need to do is re-insert that line?

Thanks again!

no, if you re-installed 98, it would kill the boot loader, and you'd screw up your win2k install!

there's a certain procedure for adding 98 back onto a win2k/xp box

ask when you decide to do it, i don't have time to go into it now. or PM me sometime!
