I know 3.1 is REALLY old but my uncle only wants a computer for his 6 year old son. He has like 12 megs of ram, like 66 mhz, and a 650 meg hd. I want to get internet working so i can download games for him. I would put them on diskette and transfer it onto his pc but his floppy doesnt work properly. Is there a dial up networking program that i can get for it? i really have to get this going soon, can you guys help?

Thanks,

ahhh does the internet even work on 3.1!?! I dont think it has such an option. I think Win95 will work on that computer.

Can't you just temporarly stick in your floppy drive, or maybe buy a REAL cheap used floppy drive?

Find a copy of Netscape 16-bit. Netscape 3.0 was the top browser of the time. It comes with a dialer and TCP stack.

If I remember correctly, you will have to find a 16-bit version of Winsock and install it. Then you will have to dial in using whatever package came with it back then and then when you enter in your username and password and select PPP/SLIP, then you will let winsock make the handshake.

You will probably have to look around for a 16-bit version of netscape or mozilla or something. Good luck :)

<< you need 16 megs of ram for win 95 >>

Haha, tell that to my IBM Thinkpad 486/25 with 12MB of RAM and a 500 MB, sitting right in front of me running Windows 95. You must be doing something wrong. Hey, I said it was running, I didn't say it was running fast! But it's not unbearably slow, either.

I have in fact (just as an experiment) installed Win95 on a 486 with 4 MB of RAM and it was quite slow, but it worked well (and was even more stable than many 'fast' systems I have seen.. Try it. You might like it.. :)

When 95 first came out I ran it on a 486/66 with 16 MB. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. :Q

I know you need Trumpet Winsock. Hopefully if you can find that you'll find some documentation with it.

It's actualy more stable than the winsock that shipped initaly with Win95, and lets you manuly set MTU and TTL settings easily. I miss it.

I vividly remember the days of Trumpet Winsock and my loud obnoxious modem dialing into my ISP connecting at a blisterin 14.4. DSL under Win2k is much nicer IMHO - just click and your on :)

This reminds me, my sister has a 386/16 with 8Megs Ram and 360Meg HD. With Win 3.1 and wants AtHome cable? I just can't do it. I timed the sucker from boot to loading wordperfect 8 for windows and it took 9 minutes. I'll go MAD I tell you.
